I was recently reading the documentation on Micro.blog’s support of podcasts and auto-generated transcriptions and noticed that only MP3 files appear to be supported. This is a bit surprising since many recording apps on iOS don’t offer MP3 as a file format option at all. I’m curious what apps people are using on iOS to convert M4A files, such as from Voice Memos, into MP3? I was hoping to be able to publish recordings from Voice Memos directly, but I wouldn’t want to do that at the cost of losing auto-generated transcription. I realize Voice Memos supports its own transcription now, but uploading that text separately from the audio recording, all managed via Mobile Safari, seems like something that would not be fun or easy to do while on the go.
Have you tried the Micro.blog created app for this purpose called Wavelength.
Yep, Wavelength is nice because it converts to MP3 automatically. I wish we had more of a UI for uploading just for voice narration if you don’t need a podcast episode too. That’s something I’d like to work on.
I’ve also been reviewing where we require MP3 and I think we can expand it to support M4A as well. I’ll be rolling that out over the next couple of days.
Thanks for the great suggestion. I have looked at Wavelength, however, it sadly doesn’t record in stereo which most other recording apps are able to do on iPhone. I was then hoping I might be able to record with Voice Memos, Just Press Record, or similar app and share to Wave Length, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’s possible either.
This is fantastic, I also like the idea of narrated posts for those who may not want a podcast. I’ll definitely stay tuned to see where you go with this and in the meantime, I can look for a Shortcut or some other utility that can allow me to convert M4A to MP3 on iOS.
