Understanding replies mobility across networks

I’m trying to understand the new replies mobility on Micro.blog a bit better. So I crosspost via a category feed to another account (not Micro.blog’s native Fediverse-powered one) on Mastodon.

The top reply originated on Mastodon to which Matt responded, I assume, on Mastodon. But I saw the mention on Micro.blog first. That reply also shows up on Mastodon. But I replied via Micro.blog, and Matt responded.

However, the last two replies don’t show up on Mastodon. I thought they would also appear on Micro.blog (and ergo, on my blog if it started as a post).

What am I missing? Should I stick to replying to Mastodon posts always on Mastodon? I usually reply wherever I see it first. Or does the replies feature only apply if you use Micro.blog’s native crossposting feature (I use Echofeed)?

I’m 95% sure by not using native crossposting, micro.blog has no idea what Mastodon post ID to associate with the Micro.blog stuff.

Yup. That was my thought too. Hence I was surprised to see the first two replies on Micro.blog. Wonder how it got them.

Right, generally Micro.blog will only get replies if you have cross-posting enabled. It uses the same Mastodon authorization to both cross-post and pull replies from your Mastodon account. However, it could discover the same posts if they were flowing through the fediverse via ActivityPub. I have a feeling that’s what happened in your example. (Either that or magic! There are a lot of moving pieces that overlap.)
