Share Intent Seems Not to Capture Data on Micro.blog Android App

Issue Description

When using the Android share menu to share content to Micro.blog, the app launches but fails to capture any content from the share intent. The app opens without any of the shared content being populated.

Expected Behavior

  • The Micro.blog app should properly capture and display the shared content
  • OR if it cannot handle the shared content type, it should not appear as an option in the Android share menu

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open any app with shareable content (browser, photo gallery, etc.)
  2. Select content to share
  3. Tap the share button
  4. Select Micro.blog from the share menu
  5. Observe that the app launches but none of the shared content appears

Technical Details

  • Device: Google Pixel 9 Pro XL
  • Android Version: 15 AP4A.250205.002
  • Micro.blog App Version: 2.3.0

Additional Notes

I noticed this creates a bit of confusion in the workflow when trying to share content. It would be wonderful if the app could either properly handle the intent or appear in the share menu only for content types it can process. The Micro.blog team has built an excellent platform, and I’m sure enhancing this functionality would make the already great user experience even better. No error messages currently appear to indicate why the sharing didn’t work as expected.

Thanks for this excellent report! While it will be @vincent or @manton looking into the issue and fixing it, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve seen a similar report in the support email, and it’s on our radar.

@sod @vincent @manton I wanted to follow up on this request I made two months ago. Is there any opportunity for it to be implemented soon?

For me, the fact that the micro.blog Android app doesn’t accept anything incoming is frustrating on two levels.

First, if it won’t accept incoming share intents, it shouldn’t be currently available on the share intent menu. As far as I can gather, it’s on there because of certain “I’m available to be shared [blank]” settings within AndroidManifest.xml.

Second, I must admit, I have a longstanding inbuilt behavior to, when I’m chuckling at something, wanting to share it. I love micro.blog - I really do, for multiple reasons (including, honestly, your amazing reaction, @manton, to the WHOIS issue).

But it is admittedly frustrating to be not be able to share those from my phone. It is a feature that I thought existed by virtue of the app existing, when I was first looking into “moving” my social presence here.

I think it might be worth escalating this to a high priority on your roadmap.

No discourtesy meant in the above.

As a sort of off-topic aside, at this pastebin is the micro.blog posting bookmarklet.

However, I had an idea. For those of us who sometimes want to just post the link with no comment, it might be neat to see if this bookmarklet could somehow be adapted so that there could be a post simply triggered by the bookmarklet, without the intervening of the edit window.

Sorry for not having an update on this yet. I’m looking into it again. We fixed an issue with sharing from some apps on iOS recently but I think the Android issue is a separate thing that needs attention.

Thanks!
