It adds a few bells and whistles, like the quoted website’s favicon (if it has one). And no, you can skip it, the quote will just look a little less fancy.
The easiest way to make a quote in Markdown or on Micro.blog is like this:
Look what [pluvialgeist wrote](https://help.micro.blog/t/quotebacks-embed-script/4320):
