I relatively recently imported my self-hosted WordPress blog to Micro.blog and I thought all went well, however I noticed that none of my audio files imported. In addition, I have a bunch of categories that never existed on my WordPress site.
Regarding audio files: I checked the documentation and while I see that images should copy over, I sort of assumed that other linked content would copy over as well (yes, I should not have assumed :(). I’m not sure how to fix this short of manually uploading all the audio files, finding related posts and manually recreating all the audio links, is there an easier way?
Category issue: I think many of these were likely tags on WordPress, but they definitely weren’t all categories. Is there any way I can bulk delete the now many unwanted categories I have in Micro.blog? Since I had some tags that used the same name as my WordPress categories, my fear is that I’ll have to go through and manually recategorize everything.
Ultimately, none of this is a big deal, but it’s extra work that I wasn’t planning on having to do, so I just want to make sure I’m approaching it in whatever way makes the most sense. As always, I appreciate any thoughts.
As for categories, yes, because MB does not separate tags and categories, they are combined. You can just delete categories from your Categories page that you don’t want — when you click Categories on the side bar it’ll show you a list of categories with a delete button next to each one. Deleting a category doesn’t delete the posts, it just removes the category.
There’s no bulk delete. I think we need a “just remove all categories” button. In the meantime, if you email help@micro.blog I can batch delete them for you.
Maybe the import is also wrong and shouldn’t try to convert tags to categories. That seems to cause more problems than it’s worth.
I love the idea of not converting tags to categories. Is there a way maybe to have categories map to categories, but have tags get appended to post content as hashtags or similar? Also, thanks for the offer to bulk delete, however this might be a good opportunity for me to remove all the categories, go through past posts and re-categorize them in a better way. Since I’ll need to fix a bunch of audio posts anyway, this probably makes the most sense.
