I’d like to be able to paste or drag images into the web editor. Save a few clicks.
This would be very nice, I agree.
I’ve added initial support for this in Firefox and Chrome. Pasting a photo will upload it and insert the <img>
tag for the photo directly where the cursor is. Not sure about Safari yet, there are some technical limitations.
This is a different workflow than using the photo button. Because it inserts the tag, you don’t get the same interface as before. I think it’s more appropriate for longer posts that have photos interspersed with the text, but it’s something I think we can change or improve in the future.
Thanks so much, Manton! I’ll give this a try soon.
This works, although it’s a little bumpy:
- I got a broken-image icon at first, after copying from the Photos app on the Mac. I think that the problem is that the image was in HEIC format. I think I have run into this problem with HEIC before. I see three possible solutions: (1) Apple needs to stop trying to make HEIC a thing. (2) micro.blog can support HEIC (3) micro.blog can deliver a more explicit error message when a user tries to upload a HEIC file. Two of these solutions are under your control, and one would be easier than the other, I imagine.
- After I hit Preview there was no way to go back and re-edit the post. No “Edit” button, and the back button didn’t work. I closed the tab and posted again.
You’ve saved me $6/mo — I have been using Ulysses over the past day or two for this purpose, and only this purpose.
And I think this will be my default way of doing image posts.
Thanks again!
Also, here is the post, for your enjoyment, part of my “Here’s something I saw while walking the dog” series.
HEIC is not widely supported by browsers, and tha’ts 100% the problem. I use Yoink as an easy way to drag out an HEIC and get it in JPEG.
Yeah, I sort of hope HEIC goes away. But I think I can work around this problem soon. Interestingly I tested copying from Photos on my Mac and it copied as JPEG.
For the preview, the button acts as a toggle. Click once to preview, click it again to toggle back to the editor. Not totally unintuitive, we may be able to improve the styling of it.
Thanks for the tips, @jsonbecker and @manton . And again thanks Manton for implementing this feature.
I already have Yoink so that’s simple enough.
I’ve also made a change that should fix supporting HEIC directly. I still recommend JPEG, though, can’t go wrong with that format.
