Editing a html/md of a post with photo attachments

I noticed with the new editor that if you attach a photo, it includes a thumbnail at the bottom of the page. There seems no way to edit these photos, say I want to replace one of them with an updated version. One has to delete the old photo re-added it, but that doesn’t allow for re-ordering or editing, links, and alttext for the post. It seems like there should be a way to edit the raw postcode instead of hide the photo posts behind an editor front end on the webpage.

Also adding a new photo means either uploading a fresh photo or going over to paste the code, and then there’s a mixed photo post of some saved in thumbnail and others in code.

This awkward view is on the web editor, but not on mobile

The web editor has and continues to frustrate me. To edit a post and and put images in the middle of the post I had to leave the web editor and open the desktop app, and use both as a copy/paste, as the desktop/mobile app, thankfully, still shows the IMG html.

if there were a way to toggle off the rich editor stuff (I’m thinking similar to Obsidian Writing view vs Code View)

This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but when I include images in a post, I just add the markup, which I get from the uploads page. The view in the editor remains markdown / HTML, unless I click the preview button. (Click the same button to deactivate the preview.) The preview itself is extremely limited, though, because it doesn’t know my CSS, which includes grid display or flex boxes to help arrange the images and keep the pages responsive.

I usually just compose in a third-party text editor, though. If I were organized, I would test that stuff out with my CSS on my own computer, but I haven’t worked out how to do that. Instead I go by experience, when it comes to image positioning, and experience preserved in reusable snippets.

Just to clarify on the alt text, you can click on the photo thumbnail and add alt text there. But you’re right, we made an improvement recently so that when editing a post, if there are photos at the end of the post, it uses the photo thumbnail interface so that it’s easier to work with. This more closely matches the interface when creating a new post.

It only does this when there are photos at the end of a post. So if you have “text + photos + more text”, you’ll see the raw HTML for the photos <img> tag.

I agree there should be a way to override this so that you can just edit the raw HTML and Markdown, the way it used to work. Let me think about where to put that option.

I discovered there’s a bug with the photo thumbnails not updating correctly for drafts. I’m fixing that. I have a feeling this may have caused the new interface to appear worse than it was intended to be.

Update: This has now been fixed.

I’ve added a new option: if you hold down the option key while clicking Edit, it will now open the post for editing with the raw Markdown and HTML.

I realize this is not discoverable, but hopefully as a stopgap it helps when you don’t want the photo thumbnails interface.
