Is there a way to make the default thumbnail on cross-posts better? For example, here’s a screenshot of a cross-post to Threads that shows my profile pic as the thumbnail for the post. However, the resolution is terrible and it’d be nice to customize this somehow. Is there any way to control this?
Yes, it’s based on what’s set as the opengraph image in your head
– you can customize your theme and change what image that’s pointed to.
Yeah, I think we need to consider changing something so the default on Threads isn’t so bad. As Jason said this can be customized now, but takes a little tinkering with a plug-in.
One thing I was experimenting with is generating a thumbnail image of every blog post and making that the default. We are doing this behind the scenes now but it’s not really exposed anywhere. If there’s interest I’ll work on that some more.
Happy to hear other suggestions too.
@jsonbecker thank you, again! @manton yeah that sounds good. in the meantime I’ll try tinkering with the plugin.
I reviewed this and now remember why I didn’t launch thumbnail images as a feature yet. They just aren’t very good. Here’s an example of what your blog post looks like rendered as a static image.
Of course this could be improved. I still think it has potential as a placeholder in various places.
Thanks! Appreciate the context.
