When composing posts in Micro.blog on the web, sometimes I get a character limit of /300 and sometimes I get a limit of /600. Seems almost random. What generates this character limit?
FYI…my cross-posting settings stay consistent. I’m cross-posting to Bluesky and using Micro.blog’s Fediverse account for Masto.
Just curious about this more than anything. Thanks!

Micro.blog bumps the limit to 600 if there’s a block quote in it. The idea was that 300 is too limiting if you wanted to embed or quote someone else’s post. Instead of creating a special “repost” type of post, we just stick with HTML and Markdown quotes, and give more flexibility on the length.
As you discovered, cross-posting is still limited by the limit in whatever service like Bluesky you’re using. So Bluesky is always 300 and Micro.blog will truncate when copying the post there.
