Bookshelves Woes

I continue to struggle with harmonizing the Bookshelves and the Goals. For organization purposes, I have bookshelves by year (Read in 2024, etc.) for easier recap. So once I’m done reading a book which is usually on the Currently Reading shelf, I move it to the ‘Read in 2024’ shelf.

So far so good. I’m assuming it sets the ‘Finished Reading Date’ based on the date you add it to the ‘Read in 2024’ shelf (marked as a Finished shelf in Settings).

I have already set up a goal for 2024. So I assume, it will add the book to this goal and it does that. But in the wrong order, at the bottom of the shelf instead of the top (ordered by recency). And it does this randomly i.e., sometimes at the top and sometimes at the bottom. The ‘Date Finished’ is correct for all the books.

See screenshots.

May we have some consistency?

I’m updating this to always sort by the finished date for the goals book list. However, I’ve found an issue where sometimes the finished date for a book isn’t set as you’d expect it to. If that happens, those books will be sorted to the bottom of the list until the date is set again. Looking into whether I can automatically update that in the future.

Do we have to manually set this date? I thought the date we moved or added it to the Finished-Reading shelf would be considered as the finished date.

also, I’ve noticed, at least on the iOS, that manually setting the finished date doesn’t stick, or it does but is not displayed correctly. It shows the date the book was added to a shelf. If I’ve added it six months ago, that’s the date it shows.

You shouldn’t have to manually set it. Maybe what I’m seeing is part of this iOS bug. Are you using the web, or the Epilogue app?

Always Epilogue. I use the web to fix issues.

I also still use GoodReads and Literal.club. Everything works fine in those apps including with the Goals.

I think having hidden metadata makes this feature hard to use in general. Just my 2 cents. I don’t really have a use for goals though, since I manually make annualized shelves I can just look at shelf count for how many books I’ve read.

I’ve rolled out the fix to goal books sorting. Hopefully it’s a little better. There may still be areas where the finished date is not set, still investigating that.

Thanks. Two books were restored to their correct place in the Goals tab, but three were not. The ‘Read in 2024’ bookshelf has them in the proper order. The Finished Date is accurate for all five.

@manton I’ve noticed a few books hanging out at the top of my Want to Read list, they don’t follow the date added. I recently read one of these books, and when I moved it to Finished Reading last night, it doesn’t show at the top of the list. Assistant to the Villain should be my last Finished book, but it’s halfway down my list.

These are the titles stuck at the top of my want to read list, even though some of them were added a year ago.

Can you try tapping and holding on one of the books and choose Edit Finished Date? Lemme know if that doesn’t fix it. There is definitely an issue with dates sometimes, trying to figure it out.

Ah, that fixed the incorrect entry in my Finished list. I didn’t realize you could edit the finish date that way.

So one more hint. After I add a book to my “Read in 2024” shelf (categorized as a Finished shelf) and write a post without altering the bookshelf name, it places the book in the correct position (most recent) but if I replace the text from “Read in 2024” to “Finished Reading” in the blog post before posting, it places the book lower down the list in a random place.
