Editing / deleting posts and ActivityPub

I’m testing out micro.blog to see if it would be suitable for me and have a couple of questions about editing / deleting posts.

  • The ActivityPub version of a post seems to be just the post title + link. Ok. But if I edit a post title for example, is that change ever reflected on the AP profile or is the first version of a post going to be immortalised there forever?

  • How about deleting posts, is the deletion sent over AP or will those posts just sit there pointing to dead links? EDIT: It seems they are deleted, found this recent news update about it Micro.blog News -

  • Does editing a post title give any way to update the URL to match? I couldn’t see a way but might just be missing it.

Just trying to wrap my head around some specific niggles of my use case so if anyone knows how this works I’d appreciate it very much, thank you!

Hi, and welcome to Micro.blog! :waving_hand:

Yeah, I think @manton’s idea is that edits and deletions should federate, and they often do, but as you’ve noticed, there have been some edge cases that needed ironing out. There might still be a few. If you suspect a bug, send an email to help@micro.blog with a link to the post that’s causing trouble.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to change the URL. You’ll need to delete the post and create a new one, setting the publish date to match the original.

Thank you! I’m having fun tinkering and experimenting with a new toy

I haven’t found any of my edits are federating out quite yet but have only tested a couple of times, more sciencing needed there maybe. If I find any kind of reliable pattern of course I’ll report it. Completely familiar with the precarious nature of federation though so as long as I know MB attempts to notify of edits that’s enough for me.

The URL thing is going to take some creative thinking to work around, but thanks for confirming how it works!

A perpetual issue with URLs is that people share them, and expect them to point to the thing in question.

I used to write for a financial blog that used the name of the post to generate the URL, but carefully refrained from ever changing the URL, because if someone important shared the URL, such as to Reddit or Digg, we all wanted to pick up any resulting clicks, even if we’d edited the title of the post in the meantime.

Yes I generally use the editing in case of immediately spotted typos before sharing, once a post is established I agree it’s best to just leave it.

In this particular case I was asking because posting with one title and then editing to another could have been a workaround for some AP stuff, just trying to make sure I understand how each side works so I can come up with a good plan
